Tes MotoGP Qatar Hari Terakhir Dibatalkan

Doha - Ujicoba pramusim MotoGP 2015 yang berlangsung di Sirkuit Losail, Qatar terpaksa hanya dilakukan sepanjang dua sesi. Sesi terakhir yang dijadwalkan pada Senin (16/3/2015) dibatalkan karena hujan.

Dilaporkan Autosport, panitia penyelenggara ada awalnya memutuskan menunda waktu start dengan harapan ada cuaca akan cerah. Tapi pada akhirnya, ujicoba dibatalkan tanpa ada seorang pebalap pun yang turun ke trek mengingat kondisi yang tidak memungkinkan.


Hujan yang mengguyur sirkuit sepanjang hari ditambah dengan cahaya dari lampu sorot bisa menciptakan kesilauan yang bisa mempengaruhi jarak pandang sehingga tidak aman bagi para pebalap.


Di ujicoba pamungkas ini, Ducati tampil impresif dengan motor barunya GP 15. Tim Italia itu mendominasi dua hari tes ini dengan menempatkan Andrea Iannone sebagai pebalap tercepat di hari pertama dan Andrea Dovizioso di hari kedua.


Secara keseluruhan Ducati memimpin ujicoba selama dua hari tersebut dengan menempatkan Dovizioso terdepan dengan catatan waktu 1 menit 54,907 detik yang dibukukan di hari kedua. Juara bertahan Marc Marquez di posisi kedua dengan selisih 0,184 detik.


Seri pertama MotoGP 2015 akan dibuka dengan balap malam di Qatar pada 29 Maret mendatang.

Marquez: Honda Sudah Tuntaskan Semua Pekerjaan Rumahnya

Sepang - Marc Marquez dan Honda menjalani latihan pramusim kedua di Sirkuit Sepang dengan sukses. Berbagai hal yang dijadwalkan diuji berhasil dilalui dengan catatan memuaskan.

Marquez sebenarnya memulai sesi latihan pramusim kedua di Sepang dengan hasil tak memuaskan karena cuma bisa duduk di posisi enam pada hari pertama. Masalah pada sistem pengereman membuat dia tercecer jauh dari para pesaing.


Rider belia asal Spanyol itu baru bangkit di hari kedua dan ketiga setelah sukses mencatatkan waktu tercepat. Di dua hari tersebut dia mengalahkan pesaing terdekatnya, Jorge Lorenzo.


"Saya senang karena pagi ini kami mencatatkan waktu yang bagus, itu adalah hal yang penting, tapi terutama saya puas karena kami menyelesaikan semua pekerjaan yang tertunda sejak hari pertama. Kami menuntaskan hari ini, dengan semua pekerjaan rumah sudah terselesaikan dan saya punya waktu untuk melakukan simulasi balapan di sore, dengan temperatur 49 derajat celcius," terang Marquez.


Dari tiga hari sesi yang digelar, catatan waktu terbaik Marquez ada di kisaran satu menit dan 59 detik. Sementara rekor dia di Sepang adalah di kisaran satu menit dan 58 detik. Meski tidak bisa menajamkan catatan pribadinya, banyak hal positif didapat Marquez dari sesi ujicoba kali ini.


"Kami sudah menuntaskan semua target yang kami pasang untuk tes ini, sekarang untuk tes di Qatar kami akan lebih fokus pada balapan dan mencari setelan terbaik untuk motor."


"Semuanya sangat dekat, tapi setelah enam hari segalanya membaik. Kami butuh untuk menunggu sampai di Argentina, Jerez, menunggu sampai balapan sebenarnya untuk mengetahui level para pesaing. Saya pikir tidak ada hal baru lain yang akan dicoba," lanjutnya di Crash.

Marquez Kembali Catat Waktu Terbaik, Lorenzo di Posisi Dua Lagi

Sepang - Rider Repsol Honda Marc Marquez mencatatkan waktu terbaik dalam tes pramusim Sepang II pada hari ketiga, Rabu (25/2/2015). Seperti tes pada hari sebelumnya, Marquez dibuntuti oleh pebalap Movistar Yamaha Jorge Lorenzo.

Marquez kali ini mencatatkan waktu 1 menit 59,115 detik, yang merupakan torehan terbaiknya dalam tes Sepang II, meskipun belum bisa melampaui rekor tak resmi yang ia buat di akhir tes Sepang I yakni 1 menit 58,867 detik.


Lorenzo sementara itu menyudahi tes hari ini dengan waktu terbaik 1 menit 59,437 detik. Ini juga menjadi torehan waktu terbaik darinya dalam tes Sepang II.


Berbeda dari tes kemarin, hari ini bukan cuma Marquez dan Lorenzo saja yang mampu melajukan motornya untuk membuat waktu putaran menembus kisaran 1 menit 59 detik. Ada lima rider lain yang sekarang mampu melakukannya.


Di posisi tiga ada Cal Crutchlow dari LCR Honda dengan 1 menit 59,658 detik, diikuti Andrea Iannone dari Ducati (1:59.722), Valentino Rossi yang membalap untuk Movistar Yamaha (1:59.833), rider Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Bradley Smith (1:59.883), dan Dani Pedrosa dari Repsol Honda (1:59.912).


Tes Sepang II akan berjalan sampai dengan hari Kamis (26/2) lusa kendatipun tes hari terakhir tersebut bakal sepenuhnya digunakan untuk pengembangan tes ban Michelin. Tes pramusim berikutnya dilangsungkan di Losail, Qatar, pada 14-17 Maret depan.

Suzuki Luncurkan Motor Balapnya

Jakarta - Suzuki meluncurkan motor yang akan digunakan dalam musim comeback-nya di ajang MotoGP. Masih memakai warna biru khasnya, pabrikan asal Jepang itu merangkul perusahaan oli untuk jadi sponsor utama.

Untuk musim 2015 ini, nama resmi yang diusung oleh Suzuki adalah 'Team SUZUKI ECSTAR'. Sama seperti terakhir meninggalkan ajang MotoGP, Suzuki kembali muncul dengan memakai biru sebagai warna dominan pada livery mereka.


Motor Suzuki yang dipamerkan secara resmi, Jumat (6/3/2015) ini sama seperti yang sudah dipakai pada sesi latihan pramusim. Perbedaan terbesarnya hanya tulisan ECSTAR yang menghiasi kedua sisi motor.


"Akhirnya, Suzuki akan kembali ke MotoGP, seri balapan top dunia. Dengan kompetisi level atas yang akan dihadapi, itu akan membuat kami meningkatkan teknologi yang kami punya, dan secara agresif akan digunakan pada model-model produksi dan berinteraksi dengan seluruh pelanggan di seluruh dunia," demikian pernyataan General Manajer Eksekutif, Eiji Mochizuki.


"Suzuki akan tertantang untuk meningkatkan kepuasan pelanggan di seluruh dunia ke level yang lebih tinggi,melalui balapan dan produk-produk kami. Kami meminta fans untuk mendukung Team SUZUKI ECSTAR," lanjutnya di situs resmi MotoGP.


Untuk musim 2015, Suzuki diperkuat oleh Pol Espargaro dan Maverick Vinales.


Suzuki menarik diri dari ajang MotoGP pada akhir 2011 dengan alasan demi mengurangi pengeluaran sebagai dampak merosotnya ekonomi global. Setelah tiga tahun absen mereka akhirnya memutuskan balik ke kelas rajanya balapan motor.


Kemenangan seri terakhir yang didapat Suzuki adalah di MotoGP Prancis tahun 2007 melalui pebalap Chris Vermeulen. Sementara titel juara dunia terakhirnya adalah di tahun 2000 atas nama Kenny Roberts Jr.

Ducati Kembali Dominan, Dovizoso Tercepat

Doha - Ducati kembali unjuk kecepatan di ujicoba pramusim terakhir yang digelar di Qatar. Di sesi hari kedua, para pebalapnya finis di tiga besar tapi kali ini Andrea Dovizioso yang keluar sebagai pebalap tercepat.

Di Sirkuit Losail pada sesi yang berakhir Senin (16/5) dinihari WIB, Dovizioso dan Andrea Iannone masih menggeber tunggangan barunya Desmosedici GP15. Dovizioso sukses mencatatkan waktu 1 menit 54,907 detik unggul 0,184 detik dari juara bertahan Marc Marquez.


Iannone, yang berjaya di hari pertama, mengakhiri latihan di tempat ketiga dengan selisih waktu 0,197 detik dari rekan setimnya itu. Duo Yamaha; Jorge Lorenzo dan Valentino Rossi melengkapi lima besar.


Sementara itu Dani Pedrosa terlempar dari lima besar. Pebalap Honda Repsol ini menepati urutan keenam dengan selisih 0,001 detik dari Rossi di depannya tapi tertinggal nyaris 0,7 detik dari Dovizioso.

Rossi Sudah 'Gatal' Ingin Memulai Musim

Doha - Rider Movistar Yamaha Valentino Rossi optimistis dengan Yamaha YZR-M1 yang akan jadi andalannya di MotoGP 2015. Rossi sekaligus menegaskan dirinya, dan juga para rider lain, sudah tidak sabar menjalani balapan pertama di musim yang baru.

Dengan rangkaian tes pramusim sudah tuntas, para pebalap MotoGP kini tinggal menghitung hari untuk sampai ke balapan pertama di Losail, Qatar, pada tanggal 29 Maret depan. Rossi, dipuaskan dengan girboks baru Yamaha, adalah salah satu yang sudah tak sabar segera memulai.


"Tes pramusim sudah berjalan positif. Motornya telah lebih baik daripada tahun lalu dan inilah yang terpenting. Ini akan jadi sebuah musim yang bagus," kata Rossi seperti dikutip Crash.


"Ada banyak pebalap yang bakal melaju cepat dan (membuat persaingan jadi) ketat. Untuk bisa ada di depan kami harus berada dalam performa 100%. Girboks yang baru akan membantu kami. Girboks itu bekerja dengan baik dan sangat membantu pengereman. Ini bukan sebuah keunggulan besar, tetapi tetap sebuah keunggulan.


"Aku benar-benar ingin segera memulai musim ini. Para pebalap sudah tidak sabar lagi. Kami semua sudah gatal ingin mengawali kejuaraan. Cuma tinggal beberapa hari dan terlepas dari hal tersebut saya bisa pastikan kami semua siap membalap!" serunya.

Ducati Tunggu Tes Qatar Dulu Baru Putuskan Apa Akan Pakai GP15 di Balapan Pertama

Sepang - Desmosedici GP15 yang menjadi tunggangan baru Ducati sudah mendapat respons positif dari dua pebalapnya, Andrea Dovizioso dan Andrea Iannone. Tetapi belum ketahuan apakah GP15 akan langsung start di balapan pembuka musim 2015.

GP15 menjalani debutnya di tes pramusim Sepang II pekan ini. Namun, motor itu tak digunakan sepenuhnya karena GP14.3 juga masih dihadirkan di garasi dan juga ditunggangi Dovizioso dan Iannone.


"Untuk Iannone saya pikir kami sudah menemukan pengaturan yang bagus. Titik awal yang wajar untuk GP15. Dengan Dovi saya pikir kami mesti bekerja sedikit lebih keras karena kami harus mengatasi masalah di akhir area pengereman. Jadi saya cukup gembira, meski tidak senang-senang amat," kata General Manager Ducati Corse Gigi Dall'Igna di Crash.


"Ada beberapa hal kecil yang tak kami duga. Tapi saya pikir itu cukup wajar mengingat motornya benar-benar baru sehingga Anda tak bisa memprediksi semuanya. Anda harus menguji, mengecek apa yang terjadi, lalu berusaha mengatasi masalah yang ada. Menurut saya 80% komentar dari pebalap sudah pas dengan simulasi kami, tapi ada kurang lebih 20% sisanya yang mesti kami pahami," jelasnya.


Dengan situasi itulah Dall'Igna belum mau terlebih dulu memberikan kepastian apakah GP15 akan start dalam balapan pertama musim ini di Losail pada 29 Maret. Ia baru mau bicara lebih lanjut usai tes pramusim di tempat yang sama pada 14-17 Maret depan.


"Sebelum tes di Qatar, saya tak mau membuat keputusan sehubungan mengenai motor mana yang akan kami gunakan di balapan pertama. Satu lintasan saja tidak cukup untuk sepenuhnya memberi memverifikasi terhadap motor baru itu dan saya juga butuh kilometer lebih banyak dengan mesinnya," sebutnya.


"Saat ini kami tak memiliki masalah (reliabilitas) apa pun. Dan ini bagus. Tapi kami harus terus menambahkan jarak tempuh dan melihat apa yang terjadi. Kami masih harus membuat perbandingan lain antara GP14.3 dan GP15 di tes Qatar, dan setelah itu mungkin kami bisa memiliki opini lebih pas mengenai motor mana yang akan kami gunakan untuk balapan pertama.


"Pada akhirnya itu juga menjadi keputusan pebalap. Bukan keputusan saya. Para pebalap harus melakukan yang terbaik dalam hal performa dan bukannya mengikuti opini saya," tegas Dall'Igna.

Marquez Prediksikan Musim yang Lebih Sengit di 2015

Jakarta - Marc Marquez berharap status favorit yang disematkan padanya di musim 2015 bisa direalisasikan dengan jadi juara dunia. Dia sadar perjuangan itu akan sulit, jauh lebih berat dibanding tahun lalu.

Sepuluh kemenangan beruntun didapat Marcquez di awal musim 2014. Meski kemudian penampilannya sempat menurun, hasil tersebut membuat Marquez nyaris tanpa saingan di perebutan gelar juara dunia. Dia jadi kampiun di MotoGP Jepang, saat musim masih menyisakan tiga balapan.


Tahun ini Marquez masih dianggap sebagai salah satu kandidat juara. Berharap bisa mewujudkan status favorit tersebut, rider asal Spanyol itu mempersiapkan diri untuk pertarungan yang lebih sengit.


"Saya tidak bisa berkomentar soal favorit, tapi saya harap saya bisa berada di depan, mencopa menempatkan nama saya di posisi teratas di akhir musim. Saat ini semua masih 0 poin. Di musim yang baru semuanya bisa berubah," sahut Marquez di Marca.


Honda dan Marquez menunjukkan indikasi positif untuk kembali berjaya di musim 2015. Dari sesi latihan pramusim yang sudah digelar, Marquez berulang kali jadi pencatat waktu terbaik.


Sementara untuk kompetisi di musim 2015, pesaingan memperebutkan titel juara dunia masih melibatkan nama-nama yang sama. Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo dan Dani Pedrosa disebutnya bakal jadi penghadang.


"Kami harus bekerja lebih keras dibanding musim lalu. Sejauh ini kondisinya bagus, tapi kami harus melihatnya di sirkuit lain untuk mengetahui dan memahami level motor dan level semua pebalap. Saya antusias, tapi saya tahu ini akan jadi musim yang sibuk, saya akan bekerja lebih keras."


"Tahun lalu Valentino (Rossi) finis kedua, saya pikir dia masih akan ada di sana (persaingan juara), tapi saya juga mewaspadai Jorge Lorenzo yang akan lebih tangguh, seperti di 2013. Dan Pedrosa juga akan ada di sana," tuntas dia.

Hari Positif untuk Marquez

Sepang - Marc Marquez dan Tim Honda bangkit di hari kedua tes pramusim di Sirkuit Sepang. Setelah masalah pada rem berhasil diatasi, sang juara dunia menjalani sesi yang positif dan sukses mencatat waktu terbaik.

Senin (23/2/2015) kemarin Marquez menjalani sesi latihan pramusim yang jauh dari memuaskan. Dihadang kendala pada sistem pengereman, dia menyudahi hari dengan finis di posisi enam daftar pebalap tercepat. Waktu terbaiknya yang 2 menit 1,190 detik terpaut 0,776 detik dari Valentino Rossi di posisi teratas.


Masalah pada sistem pengereman tersebut bisa diatasi teknisi Honda pada hari kedua ini, Selasa (24/2/2015). Hasilnya adalah torehan satu menit 59,844 detik yang mengantarnya jadi pebalap tercepat, mengalahkan Jorge Lorenzo di posisi kedua.


"Saya senang karena menjalani hari yang positif. Setelah apa yang terjadi kemarin, kami mencoba membayar waktu yang hilang dan mencoba beberapa hal. Besok kami akan melanjutkan menguji beberapa hal, demi bisa melanjutkan pengembangan dan membatasi hal-hal yang tidak berguna," sahut Marquez di akun Facebook Repsol Honda.


"Hari ini kami fokus pada perangkat elektronik dan besok kami akan lebih banyak bekerja pada sasis. Saya senang dengan bagaiman hari ini berjalan dan dengan kecepatan yang kami capai. Kita lihat apakah besok hujan akan turun sepanjang hari, karena kami butuh udara segar," lanjutnya.


Hari Marquez sebenarnya tidak sepenuhnya bagus karena dia sempat mengalami kecelakaan usai membukukan waktu terbaik. Honda menyebutnya sebagai 'kecelakaan kecil' di tikungan empat dan tidak ada laporan cedera pada rider asal Spanyol itu.

Marquez Prediksikan Balapan Pembuka yang Ketat

Doha - Juara bertahan Marc Marquez optimistis menatap seri pertama MotoGP 2015 yang akan berlangsung di akhir bulan ini. Pebalap Honda Repsol itu yakin balapan pembuka nanti akan berjalan sangat ketat.

Balapan pertama musim ini akan digelar di Sirkuit Losail pada 29 Maret. Para pebalap mesti langsung mengalihkan fokusnya setelah sesi ujicoba pramusim pamungkas yang digelar di tempat yang sama terpaksa dibatalkan akibat hujan.


Pada tes yang berlangsung selama dua hari tersebut, Marquez sukses membukukan hasil yang memuaskan kendati Ducati tampil mendominasi. Secara keseluruhan, pemuda Spanyol ini mencetak catatan waktu tercepat kedua dengan 1 menit 55,091 detik terpaut 0,184 detik di belakang pebalap Ducati Andrea Dovizioso.


"Sayang sekali tes dibatalkan karena hujan tapi aku senang dengan bagaimana kami menuju balapan pertama. Pada waktunya kami akan melihat bagaimana yang kami lakukan di sirkuit yang berbeda tapi kami bisa membuat sebuah kesimpulan positif tentang kemajuan kami di musim dingin," kata Marquez di Crash.


"Aku tidak sabar untuk memulai musim bari di sini, di Qatar yang akan berlangsung satu setengah pekan lagi. Akan menarik karena tes ini memperlihatkan bahwa balapan nanti akan ketat."


"Seperti yang bisa dilihat dari waktu dalam dua hari di sini, perbedaannya akan sangat kecil," imbuh Marquez.


Marquez memiliki rekor bagus di Losail. Dalam dua kali penampilannya, ia tak pernah finis di luar podium dan pada 2014 tampil sebagai pemenang.

Sejumlah Rider MotoGP Jatuh Saat Tes Ban Michelin di Sepang

Sepang - Hari terakhir tes pramusim Sepang II, Kamis (26/2/2015), secara khusus digunakan untuk menjajal prototype ban Michelin yang akan digunakan MotoGP 2016. Sejumlah rider jatuh dalam tes tersebut.

Jack Miller (CWM LCR Honda), Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati), Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha), dan Aleix Espargaro (Suzuki) ada di antara pebalap yang terjatuh itu ketika melajukan motornya di atas lintasan.


Miller dan Espargaro jadi korban di turn five, sementara Lorenzo dan Dovizioso sama-sama terjatuh dalam kecepatan lebih tinggi ketika sedang melintasi turn three, sebagaimana diwartakan MCN dan Crash.


Untungnya seluruh pebalap yang mengalami insiden itu dikabarkan tidak terluka, kendatipun motor Lorenzo terlihat rusak cukup parah dengan bagian kursi dan belakang motornya sampai lepas.


 

Para pebalap yang terlibat dalam tes itu sendiri, khususnya yang mendapat insiden, tidak diperkenankan bicara kepada media akibat masih adanya kontrak yang mengikat dengan Bridgestone, penyedia ban saat ini, sampai akhir musim 2015. Juga tak ada waktu putaran resmi di tes tersebut.


Menurut Michelin, insiden jatuhnya sejumlah pebalap ketika sedang memacu motor di tes kali ini dikarenakan adanya perbedaan keseimbangan daya cengkeram antara ban depan dengan ban belakang.


"Kini kami masih memiliki kekurangan dalam hal keseimbangan antara ban bagian depan dan belakang. Bagaimana caranya agar kedua ban bisa bekerja bersama-sama. Keseimbangan ban depan dan belakang lazim Anda dengar dalam balap mobil, tapi di balap motor juga demikian," jelas Direktur Teknik Michelin Racing Nicolas Goubert di Crash.

Ducati Kuasai Hari Pertama, Iannone Tercepat

Doha - Rider Ducati mendominasi hari pertama tes pramusim ketiga di Qatar. Andrea Iannone menjadi yang terbaik dengan mencatat waktu tercepat.

Di Sirkuit Losail, Minggu (15/3/2015) dinihari WIB, Iannone dan Andrea Dovizioso mendominasi tes yang berlangsung selama tujuh jam itu. Keduanya banyak menghabiskan waktu dengan tunggangan barunya, GP15.


Setelah melahap 50 lap, catatan waktu terbaik Iannone adalah satu menit 55,265 detik. Sementara Dovizioso cuma lebih lambat 0,098 detik dari Iannone.


Posisi ketiga ditempati oleh Marc Marquez yang menorehkan catatan waktu satu menit 55,554 detik atau 0,289 detik lebih lambat daripada Iannone. Di belakang Marquez ada Aleix Espargaro yang mencatat waktu satu menit 55,698 detik.


Dani Pedrosa dan Jorge Lorenzo berturut-turut menempati posisi kelima dan keenam. Sementara Valentino Rossi yang sempat crash setelah baru melewati tiga lap harus puas duduk di urutan kedelapan.

Rossi Nilai Ducati Bisa Jadi Ancaman

Jakarta - Pebalap Yamaha Valentino Rossi menilai Ducati telah mengalami perkembangan musim ini dan bertambah cepat. Juara dunia sembilan kali itu percaya Ducati juga diuntungkan sejumlah aturan.

Ducati melaju cukup menjanjikan di uji coba pramusim yang teranyar di Sepang pekan lalu. Sempat kesulitan di hari pertama dengan Andrea Dovizioso dan Andrea Iannone hanya menempati posisi 10 dan 15, laju Ducati meningkat di hari kedua. Iannone dan Dovizioso secara berurutan ada di posisi tiga dan empat.


Di hari ketiga, Iannone menghuni urutan empat sementara Dovizioso melorot ke posisi 10. Secara keseluruhan, catatan waktu Iannone berada di tangga keempat dan Dovizioso di posisi sembilan dalam daftar waktu putaran terbaik.


"Saya rasa mereka cepat. Saya melhat Dovi dan Iannone dalam kondisi bagus dan rasanya GP15 sudah sangat tangguh untuk sebuah motor baru yang sangat muda," kata Rossi dikutip Crash.


"Jadi rasanya sepanjang musim berjalan, tentunya di latihan dengan ban lebih lunak atau di balapan, Ducati bisa berbahaya," tambahnya.


Satu hal yang cukup menjadi sorotan Rossi adalah aturan yang memberikan Ducati beserta Suzuki dan Aprilia ban dan bahan bakar lebih banyak. Ketiganya memang masuk ke kelas Open sehingga mendapatkan keistimewaan tertentu.


Selain punya jatah ban lebih lunak dan bahan bakar empat liter lebih banyak untuk balapan, mereka juga diizinkan melakukan lebih banyak perubahan mesin, tidak ada batasan pengembangan mesin, dan lebih banyak kesempatan menguji motor.


Soal ban dan bahan bakar, keistimewaan dalam aspek ini secara otomatis bakal gugur andai ketiga tim mendapatkan hasil tertentu, antara lain finis tiga kali di podium dalam balapan kering. Namun Rossi mengaku tetap heran dengan langkah ini karena merasa Ducati sudah meningkat levelnya.


"Tiga kemenangan?! Jadi kita berharap mereka menyimpan ban belakang yang lebih lunak! Tapi rasanya aturan ini kurang adil. Karena sekarang Ducati sangat cepat," sambung Rossi.


"Jadi saya tidak mengerti kenapa mereka punya aturan ini. Tahun lalu mungkin bisa diterima, tapi sekarang mereka juga cepat seperti kami dengan ban belakang yang sama dengan kami. Jadi saya tidak tahu kenapa mereka punya ban belakang lebih lunak," demikian pebalap 36 tahun ini.

Marques Prediksikan Musim yang Lebih Sengit di 2015

Jakarta - Marc Marquez berharap status favorit yang disematkan padanya di musim 2015 bisa direalisasikan dengan jadi juara dunia. Dia sadar perjuangan itu akan sulit, jauh lebih berat dibanding tahun lalu.

Sepuluh kemenangan beruntun didapat Marcquez di awal musim 2014. Meski kemudian penampilannya sempat menurun, hasil tersebut membuat Marquez nyaris tanpa saingan di perebutan gelar juara dunia. Dia jadi kampiun di MotoGP Jepang, saat musim masih menyisakan tiga balapan.


Tahun ini Marquez masih dianggap sebagai salah satu kandidat juara. Berharap bisa mewujudkan status favorit tersebut, rider asal Spanyol itu mempersiapkan diri untuk pertarungan yang lebih sengit.


"Saya tidak bisa berkomentar soal favorit, tapi saya harap saya bisa berada di depan, mencopa menempatkan nama saya di posisi teratas di akhir musim. Saat ini semua masih 0 poin. Di musim yang baru semuanya bisa berubah," sahut Marquez di Marca.


Honda dan Marquez menunjukkan indikasi positif untuk kembali berjaya di musim 2015. Dari sesi latihan pramusim yang sudah digelar, Marquez berulang kali jadi pencatat waktu terbaik.


Sementara untuk kompetisi di musim 2015, pesaingan memperebutkan titel juara dunia masih melibatkan nama-nama yang sama. Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo dan Dani Pedrosa disebutnya bakal jadi penghadang.


"Kami harus bekerja lebih keras dibanding musim lalu. Sejauh ini kondisinya bagus, tapi kami harus melihatnya di sirkuit lain untuk mengetahui dan memahami level motor dan level semua pebalap. Saya antusias, tapi saya tahu ini akan jadi musim yang sibuk, saya akan bekerja lebih keras."


"Tahun lalu Valentino (Rossi) finis kedua, saya pikir dia masih akan ada di sana (persaingan juara), tapi saya juga mewaspadai Jorge Lorenzo yang akan lebih tangguh, seperti di 2013. Dan Pedrosa juga akan ada di sana," tuntas dia.

Lorenzo Optimistis Soal Peluang Jadi Juara Dunia Musim Ini

Shizuoka - Dalam dua musim terakhir Jorge Lorenzo dan Yamaha selalu kalah bersaing dari Marc Marquez yang jadi juara dunia. Tapi hal itu tidak akan terjadi musim ini karena Lorenzo yakin bisa memutus dominasi rivalnya itu.

Setelah jadi juara dunia di musim 2012, Lorenzo harus menyerah dari Marquez di dua musim terakhir ini. Pertama di tahun 2013, saat dia kalah di seri terakhir yang membuat gelar juaranya melayang.


Sementara musim lalu inkonsistensi performanya membuat Lorenzo tertinggal jauh dari Marquez dan malah harus puas mengakhiri musim di posisi ketiga, di bawah Valentino Rossi dan Marquez yang kembali memenangi MotoGP.


Memasuki musim 2015 yang akan dimulai bulan ini akhir bulan ini di Qatar, Lorenzo mulai membicarakan soal kans merebut titel juara dunia ketiganya. Bagi pebalap asal Spanyol itu musim yang baru akan berjalan lebih ketat, dengan Ducati bakal memberi perlawanan untuk Honda dan Yamaha.


Tapi melihat hasil tes pramusim di Sepang beberapa waktu lalu, di mana Lorenzo duduk di posisi kedua dan tak berselisih jauh dengan Marquez, pria 27 tahun itu optimistis untuk bisa melewati Marquez musim ini. Apalagi Lorenzo mengklaim dirinya sudah bebas dari cedera yang sempat menghambat lajunya musim lalu.


"Tes berjalan dengan sangat baik, kami melakukan pekerjaan yang hebat dan saya merasa lebih baik kali ini karena tidak harus menjalani operasi saat jeda musim. Yamaha dan saya menuntaskan musim lalu dengan baik, tapi kami mencoba pelan-pelan dulu dengan adanya motor baru, Marquez dan Honda masih jadi favorit," tutur Lorenzo di situs resmi MotoGP.


"Di Sepang kami tidak begitu jauh dan bahkan bisa lebih baik di sirkuit-sirkuit seperti Assen, Mugello, dan Phillip Island. Saya punya feeling bagus dengan motor musim ini, dengan segala perubahan yang dibuat, dan meski saya bukan yang tercepat di Sepang, saya mampu meraih dua titel bersama Yamaha dan punya harapan tinggi dengan motor musim ini," lanjutnya.


"Para pesaing kami tentu tidak tinggal diam, khususnya Honda, dan Ducati juga memperlihatkan kecepatan yang bagus. Kami tidak memulai musim sebagai favorit, jelas itu milik Honda dan Marc. Jadi kami harus bekerja keras untuk mencoba dan memulai musim ini secepat mungkin, agar kami bisa bersaing memperebutkan posisi teratas di podium."


"Musim lalu saya adalah pebalap dengan poin terbanyak dari seri Jerman hingga Valencia serta menuntaskan musim dengan sangat baik. Jika kami bisa memulai dengan level yang sama atau lebih baik lagi, jelas kami punya kesempatan besar memenangi titel juara," tuntas Lorenzo.


Akhir pekan ini akan ada tes pramusim terakhir MotoGP di Qatar.

Rossi Sebut Ducati Bisa Bersaing dengan Honda dan Yamaha

Sepang - Pebalap Yamaha Valentino Rossi mengungkapkan kekhawatirannya dengan Ducati. Tim pabrikan Italia itu diyakini Rossi akan mampu bersaing dengan Honda dan Yamaha di musim ini.

Motor baru Ducati GP15 menjalani debut penuhnya di tes pramusim Sepang II pada Selasa (24/2/2015). Andrea Iannone dan Andrea Dovizioso masing-masing mengendarai satu motor dan berhasil menuntaskan sesi ini di urutan ketiga dan keempat.


Sang juara dunia Marc Marquez gantian menjadi pebalap tercepat dengan catatan waktu 1 menit 59,844 detik hanya 0,058 detik lebih cepat daripada Jorge Lorenzo di belakangnya. Rossi yang menguasai hari pertama harus puas di urutan keenam di belakang Dani Pedrosa.


Motor baru Ducati sudah berhasil mengatasi masalah understeer yang mengganggu selama bertahun-tahun, termasuk saat diperkuat Rossi selama dua musim. Masalah tersebut yang membuat Ducati tidak pernah memenangi balapan sejak 2010.


"Aku cukup khawatir dengan Ducati, karena motornya yang lama pun tidak terlalu buruk," sahut Rossi di Crash.


"Di satu lap mereka memiliki keuntungan dengan ban yang lebih lunak, tapi dengan motor yang lama mereka sudah sangat cepat. Motor mereka terlihat lebih baik dan semua pebalapnya sangat senang. Jadi aku merasa Ducati bisa bersaing dengan Honda dan Yamaha."


"Di dalam latihan aku pikir akan sulit berada di depan (mereka) karena dengan ban super lunak mereka memiliki keuntungan yang besar. Sedang di balapan, kami berharap bisa mengambil keuntungan karena tahun lalu Honda dan Yamaha lebih baik dari Ducati, terutama di paruh kedua musim," sambung Rossi.

Seamless Gearbox Yamaha Puaskan Rossi

Sepang - Ujicoba pramusim yang digelar di Sirkuit Sepang menjadi debut Yamaha menerapkan sepenuhnya teknologi seamless gearbox. Meski tidak memberi perubahan signifikan, Valentino Rossi puas dengan aplikasi baru tersebut.

Rossi menjadi pebalap tercepat pada hari pertama ujicoba pramusim kedua di Sirkuit Sepang, Senin (23/2/2015). Catatan waktunya yang dua menit 0,414 detik lebih cepat satu detik dibanding ujicoba pramusim pertama yang digelar di sirkuit yang sama beberapa pekan lalu.


Ujicoba pramusim ini sekaligus menjadi kali pertama Yamaha mulai mengaplikasikan seamless gearbox-nya secara penuh. Sebagai catatan, Yamaha sebenarnya sudah menerapkan seamless gearbox di motornya namun teknologi tersebut baru diaplikasikan hanya untuk persneling naik.


"Semua orang di tim ini penasaran dengan gearbox baru dan impresi saya terhadapnya cukup positif. Itu tidak (memberikan) perubahan besar tapi itu memberi bantuan kecil pada saat-saat kritis di mana kami butuh untuk memperbaiki diri," ungkap Rossi.


"Motornya juga mengerem dengan lebih baik dan saya pikir kami harus lebih memahami potensi maksimal yang bisa dihasilkan. Hari pertama ini bagus dan saya senang bisa finis di posisi pertama karena saya sudah jadi yang tercepat sejak pagi," lanjutnya di MCN.


Rossi mencatat waktu terbaiknya pada tengah hari. Catatan waktunya tidak terkejar rider lain karena tak lama kemudian hujan turun dan membuat lintasan basah. Dalam kondisi tersebut seluruh pebalap memilih untuk tidak meggeber tunggangannya dengan maksimal.

Marquez Catat Waktu Terbaik, Lorenzo Kedua

Sepang - Rider Repsol Honda Marc Marquez mencatat waktu terbaik dalam tes Sepang II pada hari kedua, Selasa (24/2/2015), setelah melewati hari tak memuaskan kemarin. Valentino Rossi dari Movistar Yamaha yang terdepan di hari sebelumnya kini ada di posisi enam.

Masalah rem sudah mengganggu laju dan rencana Marquez pada tes Sepang II hari pertama, ketika ia juga cuma menempati posisi enam. Tetapi kini Marquez langsung melesat dan memuncaki waktu di hari kedua dengan 1 menit 59,844 detik.


Dengan catatan waktu tersebut Marquez menjadi satu dari dua pebalap yang mampu menembus kisaran waktu 2 menit dalam tes Sepang II kali ini, walaupun belum bisa melewati rekor tak resminya sendiri yang ia buat di akhir tes Sepang I--1 menit 58,867 detik.


Sementara itu Jorge Lorenzo dari Movistar Yamaha mencatatkan waktu putaran terbaik kedua pada hari ini dengan terpaut 0,058 detik saja dari Marquez. Dengan catatan waktu 1 menit 59,902 detik Lorenzo juga mampu menembus kisaran waktu 2 menit.


Dua pebalap dari pabrikan Ducati, Andrea Iannone dan Andrea Dovizioso, mencatatkan waktu terbaik ketiga dan keempat secara berurutan. Di tes Sepang II ini mereka mulai menggunakan Desmosedici GP15 selain juga GP14.3.


Dani Pedrosa yang membela Repsol Honda kali ini berada di posisi lima setelah kemarin ada di posisi dua. Tetapi catatan waktunya hari ini, 2 menit 0,275 detik, sedikit lebih tajam dibandingkan kemarin.


Demikian pula dengan Rossi, yang kendatipun kali ini harus puas berada di posisi enam, masih mampu sedikit menajamkan waktu jadi 2 menit 0,308 detik setelah kemarin membuat 2 menit 0,414 detik. Next

Ducati Targetkan Menangi Satu Balapan di 2015

Jakarta - Motor Ducati memperlihatkan potensi yang menjanjikan pada ujicoba pramusim kedua di Sepang, Malaysia, beberapa waktu silam. Memenangi balapan di 2015 diyakini jadi target realistis bagi mereka.

Pabrikan Italia itu sudah menghabiskan bertahun-tahun untuk memperbaiki motornya sejak Casey Stoner hengkang untuk bergabung Honda. Kemajuan akhirnya didapat pada musim lalu pada motor GP14, kemajuan setelah ditangani Gigi Dall'igna.


Andrea Dovizioso dan Andrea Iannone tampil mengesankan saat menjajal GP15 di tes Sepang II pada akhir Februari silam. Pebalap Yamaha Valentino Rossi bahkan mengakui bahwa Ducati berpotensi mengancam dominasi Yamaha-Honda di musim baru ini.


Sejak memenangi MotoGP Australia 2010, Ducati belum pernah memenangi satu balapan pun. Pada musim ini, Ducati optimistis bisa memutus rentetan hasil mengecewakan itu.


"Target kami adalah bersaing untuk memperebutkan podium dan memenangi satu balapan," ujar direktur olahraga Ducati Paolo Ciabatti kepada MCN.


"Hal itu bukan berarti terlalu ambisius. Ini ambisius karena jika Anda tidak menetapkan target yang ambisius maka Anda tidak akan mampu mencapainya. Jadi kami ingin menaruh tekanan ekstra pada diri kami sendiri untuk mendapatkan hasilnya," sambung dia.


"Serta kami juga mengharapkan bisa menjadi pesaing titel juara sesegera mungkin meskipun kami tahu bahwa Honda dan Yamaha memiliki motor-motor yang hampir sempurna dan memiliki empat pebalap terbaik di MotoGP," imbuh Ciabatti.

Toyota unveils 2009 Corolla and Matrix

Toyota pulled the covers off the 2009 Corolla sedan and Matrix sport wagon today at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show here.


The new Corolla, the 10th generation of the world’s best-selling compact sedan, stays about the same size, but its appeal could be greater because of an expanded lineup.


Sales are expected to start Feb. 11, said Ed La Rocque, Toyota’s national car marketing manager. He said prices won’t be announced until close to launch.


The 2009 Corolla will be available in five versions: standard, LE, XLE, S and XRS. A 1.8-liter, 132-hp engine powers all but the top-of-the-line XRS, which gets a 2.4-liter, 158-hp engine, 17-inch wheels and other performance-oriented spiffs.

The 2009 Corolla is 2 inches wider than the current model.


The new Matrix will be available in three versions: standard, S all-wheel drive and XRS. It looks a bit like a scaled-down version of the Lexus RX 350. The same two engines from the Corolla will be offered in the Matrix.

Tim Morrison, Toyota division corporate marketing manager, said it is essential that Toyota gets the Corolla right because of the growing number of stylish small cars coming to the United States.


“In style and substance, the tenth-generation Corolla will have a strong, new identity all its own,” he said. “It will be far more than merely the next-generation Corolla and will position itself perfectly above our entry-level Yaris and below our sales leader, the Camry.”

Toyota says it is on track to sell about 390,000 Corollas in the United States this year.

Toyota and GM recall nearly 1.3 million vehicles over airbag issues

Toyota is recalling certain RAV4, Yaris, Highlander, Tacoma, Corolla, and Matrix models in the U.S. market, part of a larger global recall campaign, for an issue that could prevent the airbag from deploying in the event of an accident. General Motors is recalling Pontiac Vibe vehicles for the same problem; the Vibe is mechanically similar to the Matrix because the two shared a platform and were built at the same plant.


The steering column assembly in these vehicles contains electrical connections to the driver's airbag module that's located in a spiral cable assembly, which includes a flexible flat cable. Because of the shape and location of the cable's retainer, the cable could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned. That damage could in turn break the connection to the driver's airbag module, located in the steering wheel, and the airbag could be deactivated. This poses a risk of injury to the driver in crashes where the airbag would normally deploy.



The affected vehicles include particular Toyota RAV4 CUVs made between 2006 and 2008, certain Yaris sedans and hatches made between 2006 and 2010, Highlander SUVs made between 2008 and 2010, and Tacoma trucks made between 2009 and 2010. In addition, the recall includes Toyota Corolla and Matrix, as well as Pontiac Vibe models made between 2009 and 2010.


Toyota and General Motors are in the process of notifying owners of affected vehicles. Toyota owners should expect to receive an interim notification letter in late April, and another letter will be sent when the remedy parts are available. General Motors has not mentioned yet when it will start notifying Pontiac Vibe owners of this recall.


The fix will be implemented at the dealer level, and it will consist of the replacement of the spiral-cable assembly. Toyota offered a vision of its next-generation Corolla sedan that arrives in late 2013 with the unveiling Monday of the Furia concept at the Detroit auto show.


The Furia's wheelbase is 4 inches longer than that of the current Corolla and the Furia is 2 inches longer overall. Pushing the wheels to the corners typically has advantages in dynamic handling and interior room but tends to reduce trunk space. Also, the Furia is wider but the outgoing Corolla is taller.


In a press release, Toyota calls the Furia's styling language "iconic dynamism ...which uses pure and simple surface elements to create a confident, decisive and recognizable appearance appealing to more youthful consumers."


How close is the Furia to the production Corolla? Toyota insiders said there will be few changes. In the press release, photographs show paper license plates that say "Corolla" in large letters, with "Furia Concept" in much smaller type beneath it.



But not everything will reach production. For instance, the Furia comes with 19-inch wheels, which clearly won't make the cut when the production model arrives. The standard Corolla comes with a choice of 15- or 16-inch wheels.


Critics have noted that the Corolla is emblematic of Toyota's need to move away from dowdy styling, saying that compared with vibrant compact sedans from Ford, Mazda, Hyundai and Kia, the Corolla is downright dreary.


Toyota has previously pitched the Corolla as the Lexus of affordable transportation, but that has left its styling well short of the cutting edge. Now it seems Toyota has determined that younger buyers require more intriguing design.


Toyota sold 290,947 Corollas in 2012, up 21 percent from the year before, when the Japanese tsunami reduced inventory flow. But it also marked the first time in a decade that it did not lead the compact category, having been outsold by the Honda Civic.


The annual North American International Auto Show, better known as the Detroit auto show, has maintained its place as a barometer for the entire industry. For 2013, NAIAS takes place Jan. 14-27 and will host concept cars, green cars and supercars from all the major automakers, including what's expected to be a highlight this year: the new 2014 Chevroelt Corvette. NHTSA upgrades probe of 1.2 million Toyota Corollas, Matrixes NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation in November of stalling complaints with the Toyota Matrix, shown, and the Corolla.



Federal regulators have upgraded an investigation of as many as 1.2 million Toyota Corollas for possible engine stalling.


Consumers have filed 1,101 complaints about Corollas and Corolla Matrixes for 2005-07 models, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a filing on its Website.


“The engine can stall at any speed without warning and not restart,” NHTSA said in describing the problem.


The New York Times and Consumer Reports said the agency has received similar complaints with the Pontiac Vibe--a near mechanical twin of the Matrix.


Last November, the agency opened its investigation with a so-called “preliminary evaluation.” After Toyota responded with additional information, NHTSA upgraded the probe Aug. 18 to an “engineering analysis,” according to documents posted on the agency's Web site.


An engineering analysis can lead to a recall. Since November, Toyota has recalled 11.2 million vehicles worldwide, most for problems with sudden acceleration.


Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons declined to say Monday whether the automaker is considering a recall of the vehicles under investigation.


“We are cooperating with the investigation,” he said in a phone interview. “Only North American vehicles are involved.”


No 'unreasonable risk'


In a March 2 letter to NHTSA, Toyota official Chris Santucci in Washington said, “Toyota does not believe that the alleged defect creates an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety.”



Lyons declined to say Monday whether the automaker still stands by that statement.


Toyota reported it approved 4,211 warranty claims for replacement of the electronic control unit or module, the computer that controls the engine. Six crashes have been reported, with no injuries or deaths.


In a January complaint, the driver reported a problem with a 2007 Corolla that had been driven 22,000 miles.


“When I got off work, I could not start the engine,” the driver wrote. “I tried three times and engine was finally started.”


The next morning, the driver brought the vehicle to the dealership.


Service bulletins


The dealer replaced the electronic control module, solving the problem.


Toyota said it received the first field report about the problem in November 2005 and began an investigation in March 2006. It made an improvement to the control module in June 2007 and issued four technical service bulletins to dealers.


In March, the automaker attributed the problem to two possible causes: cracks in the soldered joints of the control unit's circuit boards, and cracks in the glass coating of the varistor--a type of resistor used to protect circuits against excessive voltage by conducting increased current.


“Toyota has discovered that the supplier of the varistor changed the material and the production process, which made such cracks more likely,” the automaker wrote in its March report to NHTSA.

This 1980 Toyota Corolla Tercel Coupe has just 59,920 miles on the clock, but in eBay listing in Canton, Ga., it looks almost new.



After pointing out that this is a numbers matching car (what's the equivalent of Bloomington Gold for '80s Toyotas?) the seller writes:


"It has a/c, 4-speed and original 1A-C inline 4cyl with 2bbl carb! We have original new car 1-owner title with 59k miles documented by original owner! This one is remarkable the paint looks all original and shows super nice! Correct 12 inch steel wheels! We left the AAA & St-Louis Cardnals[sic] decals as org owner placed thats cool!"

First of all, give yourself a pat on the back if you know where the name Tercel came from etymologically (a male hawk). The Tercel being smaller than the Corolla, and somewhat similar in profile to the Fiat 128, it was very much what the British would call a "poverty-spec" model. In the U.S. market, it is what the Corolla Tercel competed with in addition to other small imports, and back in the day these were selling in huge numbers.



The Tercel was based on the Corolla platform, but it differed a bit in terms of equipment and detail. And speaking of equipment, if you thought the Corolla was sparse on standard equipment and options, then the Tercel was even more basic on the inside. The 1,452 cc SOHC four-cylinder engine produced a good-enough 60 hp, and was mated to either a four-speed or a five-speed manual that basically grew out of the transmission tunnel, without any kind of console or armrest. A three-speed automatic was also available as an option, if you wanted to be decadent.

The seller continues:


"The interior is excellent and is a factory radio delete car it has reclining buckets, rear defoger [sic] and more! We have orginal owners manual and 3 original keys and left org Toyota dealers name plate on trunk!"


A/C but radio delete? The first and only owner clearly had their priorities straight since the car presumably lived in Georgia (though the St. Louis Cardinals stickers may harbor a more complex story).... but radio delete? Really? Well, that's what the Tercel was meant to be at the end of the day -- no-frills transportation, and no radio noise to distract you from working the manual transmission to keep up with traffic with those 60 horses on tap. Actually, the pace of traffic wasn't much faster than this car offered back in the day, so in the lightweight Tercel (thanks to the weight savings achieved by not optioning a radio) the car was a reasonably quick performer.



The question that remains is whether this car is worth the ambitious $7,890 Buy it Now. (Yes, that's in U.S. dollars).

 The Toyota Corolla is the best selling small sedan, but will its redesign be enough to keep it on top?


2014 Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla compact sedan is one of the best-selling vehicles worldwide, nearing 40 million units sold since its debut in 1966.


Now entering its 11th generation, the Corolla has seen some significant styling changes and added a new, more fuel-efficient variant for 2014.


Though the 2013 Corolla is getting long in the tooth, it's still been crushing the competition: So far this year in the United States, 2013 Corolla sales are at 132,514, while the Honda Civic is 128,980 and the Ford Focus trails at 111,641.



But with the Honda Civic and Ford Focus getting alternative fuel powertrains, fresh in-vehicle technology and cutting-edge designs, Toyota knew the Corolla needed a redesign to stay in the game. Let's take a look at how the new 2014 Toyota Corolla compares to the Honda Civic and Ford Focus.

2013 Honda Civic

Design


The 2014 Corolla features a fully updated exterior design. The four-door sedan sports more athletic proportions with a wider and lower stance. The front end is changed to reflect the brand's new styling theme introduced on the larger Avalon sedan, while the rear end is tapered and adds LED taillights.


The Corolla is also lower and wider than the previous generation, with a 4-inch longer wheelbase.


The Toyota Matrix is the hatchback version of the Corolla, but there is a strong possibility it will not be renewed for the U.S. when the new Corolla goes on sale this fall.


Powertrain


The 2014 Corolla offers two 1.8-liter four cylinder engines, including a 132-hp version for the L, LE and S trims.


The new LE Eco trim is rated at 140 hp, and makes use of Toyota's Valvematic variable-valve timing and lift system. It increases horsepower and fuel economy by at least 5 percent.



The base L models can be equipped with a four-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, while the other three trims are equipped with a CVT.


The 2014 model hasn't been officially EPA fuel-economy rated, but the 2013 Corolla returned 27 city/34 highway/30 combined mpg with the five-speed manual, and 26 city/34 highway/29 combined with the four-speed automatic.


Standard features


All new Corolla models feature Bluetooth, a pollen filter and power-operated features such as locks and windows. Basic models don't contain too much else, but we like that Corolla offers Bluetooth standard.


What's new


Exterior and interior design, an LE Eco Trim with a more efficient engine and aerodynamic kit and a quieter interior through the use of acoustic glass and noise-cancelling materials.

Base price: N/A; the 2013 model base price is $17,025 including destination charges, and if the 2014 model stays the same the Corolla could be the best value in our comparison.

 The Honda Civic has maintained a strong following since its introduction to the U.S. in the 1970s, but had to be quickly redone for 2013 to address criticisms of a cost-cutting 2012 redesign.


2014 Ford Focus

Design


Available as a sedan, coupe, aerodynamically enhanced Civic HF or performance-oriented Civic Si, Honda's compact appeals to a broad list of buyers.


For 2013, the Civic takes on more of an Accord look, with premium design elements such as chrome trim and stretched LED headlights. The interior was updated for 2013 with stitched vinyl, an update to the 2012 redesign's stripped down, plastic-laden cabin.


Powertrain


The Civic has the best range of powerplants in our comparison. A re-engineered 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 140 hp is the standard mill. It can be mated to a five-speed automatic (28 city/39 highway/32 combined mpg), or a five-speed manual (28 city/36 highway/ 31 combined).



There's also the performance-oriented Civic Si model with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 201 hp (22 city/31 highway/25 combined mpg), a compressed natural gas (CNG) option that uses a variant of the 1.8-liter engine (27 city/38 highway/31 combined mpg) and the Civic Hybrid that is powered by a 1.5-liter engine with a 20 kW motor, coupled to a CVT (44 city/44 highway/44 combined mpg).


Standard features


Standard features include a multi-information display, EcoAssist driver feedback system and vehicle stability assist.


What's new


Now in its 10th generation, the 2013 Civic has a refined design, increased fuel economy and added optional convenience features.

 The Ford Focus sports the most tech-laden interior of the bunch along with a modern exterior design intended to appeal to younger drivers. It comes at a price though: a fully loaded Ford Focus can cost up to $26,000.



Design


The Ford Focus can be had in sedan or hatchback variants and an aerodynamic Super Fuel Efficient (SFE) model. We think it's the best looking of the bunch with a modern exterior design and premium interior with high-end materials and plenty of technology.


Powertrain


Ford offers a 2.0-liter gasoline direct-injected four-cylinder engine rated at 160 hp. It can be mated to a five-speed manual (26 city/36 highway/30 combined mpg) or a six-speed automatic (27 city/38 highway/31 combined mpg).


A Super Fuel Economy (SFE) package maximizes fuel economy with an aerodynamic kit, returning 28 city/40 highway/33 combined mpg.


The performance-based Focus ST has a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine with six-speed manual rated at 252 hp. It returns 23 city/32 highway/26 combined mpg.



Finally, the all-electric Focus Electric is powered by a 107-kilowatt electric motor paired with a one-speed automatic, with a mpg equivalent rating of 110 city/99 highway/105 mpge.

First drive: 2014 Toyota Corolla

What is it?


The latest evolution of the world's best-selling automotive nameplate. Given Toyota's clockwork product cycles with Corolla over nearly five decades, it's also the Corolla North Americans will be buying for the next five years.


The 2014 Corolla marks the 11th major overhaul for a car that debuted in the United States in March 1968 with a 1.1-liter, 60-hp engine, and it follows a predictable pattern. The new Corolla is incrementally better in just about every respect, playing its quality, durability and reliability card in a package intended to generate more sex appeal. And as it's done with each successive cycle -- it grew from sub-compact to compact with the seventh generation in 1993 -- the 2014 Corolla has gotten bigger.


It's at least incrementally larger in every dimension, save its roof height, which drops .4 inch. The Corolla's length increases 2.6 inches to 182.6, and its wheelbase stretches nearly 4 inches to 106.3. It all makes the new Corolla the longest car -- with the longest wheelbase -- in a competitive set including the Chevy Cruze, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda 3 and VW Jetta. Yet Corolla remains among the lightest.


The expanded footprint means substantially more legroom inside, particularly in the rear seat. At 13 cubic feet, trunk capacity increases slightly, but still falls near the bottom of the class -- 2.5 cubic feet less than the largest. The 2014 Corolla adds two airbags -- a knee-protection airbag for the driver and a unique bottom-cushion airbag for the front passenger, intended to lift thighs up and out of harm's way -- for eight total. Toyota predicts a five-star score in NCAP tests and a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS.


Sex appeal? Toyota has taken to adjusting Corolla's exterior design according to specific market tastes, so what you see above is what it thinks Americans, specifically, want. (The United States is the only market that gets only a Corolla sedan.) The 2014 is certainly less frumpy than its predecessor, and maybe the most imposing Corolla yet. Its medium distance, quick-glance impression recalls the previous-generation Focus. Closer inspection reveals an amalgam of cues and elements visible across the compact-sedan class from the Cruze to the Nissan Sentra.


The standard engine is carryover with refinements for durability and friction reduction. Toyota's 1.8-liter port-injected four makes 132 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque, surpassing only the base Jetta and Sentra engines in horsepower.


The 1.8 in the new Corolla LE Eco package adds Valvematic -- the first time Toyota has used variable valve lift in North America. Valvematic is intended to reduce pumping losses, and works something like BMW's original Valvetronic system. The throttle stays wide open in most operating circumstances, and varying the lift of the intake valves controls the intake air supply. Toyota says Valvematic improves fuel efficiency 5.3 percent in bench testing, but also raises the 1.8's redline 1000 rpm and increases peak horsepower to 140 (peak torque drops to 126 lb-ft). Thus the Corolla aimed most directly toward the Prius set is also the most powerful.


The Eco theme continues with a new a continuously variable transmission. This lightweight, belt/pulley CVT introduces a couple interesting features, including a fluid pre-warmer and hydraulics designed to minimize parasitic power loss. So equipped the Corolla LE Eco delivers 30 mpg city, 42 highway in the EPA cycle -- the highest rating for any gasoline-fueled compact, according to Toyota. The LE Eco also comes standard with an Eco switch limiting climate-control capacity and making it harder to get full-throttle operation. Corolla engineers say it can improve fuel economy another 5 percent.


The CVT comes standard in all Corolla LE trims (40 percent of anticipated volume), and it's offered in the sport-themed Corolla S (another 40 percent) with seven step ranges and shift paddles. The base Corolla L uses a carryover four-speed torque converter automatic. A six-speed manual is available in the L and the S (up from five speeds).


Underneath, the new Corolla gets refinements to its existing L-arm/strut suspension in front, mounted with a sub-frame. The torsion-beam rear axle adds a new damper and better toe control. The brakes have been engineered for less pedal pressure and shorter pedal travel but rear disks are available only on the Corolla S with an option package.


For $16,800 and an $810 destination charge, the Corolla L comes with a manual trans, 15-inch steel wheels, painted mirrors, cabin air filter, folding rear seat and four-speaker audio with Bluetooth, voice control via smartphone and iPod and USB ports. The USB delivers enough juice to charge two devices simultaneously.


At $18,300 the LE adds the CVT, cruise control, 16-inch wheels and six-speaker audio with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and back-up camera. The LE Eco with Valvematic is $18,700. For $19,000, the Corolla S gets a bolder front end with fog lights and a gloss-black honeycomb grille, turn-signal indicators in the mirrors and a rear-deck spoiler.

All Corollas come standard with steel wheels. Alloys (17-inch on the S) come in Plus or Premium option packages available on the LE and S. The top-line audio includes navigation, HD display, HD radio, XM, traffic, weather and a range of available apps.


The Corolla has come a long way since Tatsuo Hasegawa, the first Corolla's chief engineer, famously directed his people “to develop a car that brings happiness and well-being to people around the world.” Today it's sold in 154 countries from 16 assembly locations. Total sales have surpassed 40 million worldwide.


The United States remains Corolla's largest single market. Local production began in 1984 at NUMMI in Fremont, Calif., and since 1997 all U.S. Corollas have been built in North America. In calendar 2012, when Corolla was the oldest car in the compact sedan segment, it came a close second in sales behind a fresh Civic -- about 50,000 ahead of Cruze and Focus, and 90,000 ahead of Elantra.


Toyota has sold 24 million cars in the United States since Corolla debuted in 1968, and more than nine million have been Corollas. More than half the Corollas are still on the road, according to Toyota.


That explains what this car is as well as anything.


How's it drive?


Forty million customers can't be wrong, can they? That doesn't necessarily mean you want to be one of them. The 2014 Corolla drives more or less as it always has, only better, infused with familiar Toyota strengths. It might not be the most dynamic compact out there, but it's solid, presumably bullet proof, comfortable and easy to get a handle on.


Toyota focused on improving the cabin's quality and feel and it has delivered. Materials -- most notably the soft-touch on the top of the dash and door panels -- are more pleasing in the tactile sense. The seat foam is denser, though the seats remain comfortable, and the bolstering actually keeps your torso from moving. The dash design is more modern. The piano-black trim looks better than a lot of stuff in this class. The knobs are trimmed with chrome, and the layout is much easier to master than the switch-dense stacks in the Cruze or Focus.


A rear seat that was already one of the roomiest gets even better. The tiny fraction lost in headroom will bother only the tallest occupants and it's more than balanced by a substantial improvement in both legroom and ease of ingress. Better packaging is one of the new Corolla's obvious strengths.


This isn't the most inspiring compact sedan you'll find, but NVH control might be the class exemplar. It's clearly better than the previous generation though the issue is confused a bit by lower profile tires on 17-inch rims. The general level of vibration is down.


The new Corolla might be, um, sportier, too. The suspension is certainly tuned for comfort more than response. The electric steering rack has the slowest ratio of any car in this class but turn-in seems a little more emphatic than before, even if it's just the tires. There is incrementally more firmness or directness to the steering feeling, and there is definitely less flex and vibration through the shaft. The standard stability control system has an all-off function, though we aren't sure why.


The CVT works, if you get used to the drone, or if you use the step shifts and paddles. Of course drivers who want to shift manually all the time will choose the manual. We'd prefer the conventional four-speed auto in the Corolla L to the CVT even at the expense of 4 mpg overall. Obviously Toyota thinks that will be a minority opinion.


Regardless, the first choice for anyone concerned with the process of driving will be the six-speed manual. There's no easier way to improve a placid car than by adding a clutch pedal and stir stick, and that definitely applies here. The manual raises the engagement factor about 80 percent, and through normal rounds it removes concern about how the transmission will respond from the real-time decision making process. The Corolla S, with the Plus option that adds rear disks and 17-inch rims, is the one any enthusiast will want, hands down.


Do I want it?


The 2014 Corolla is not a Mazda 3, or a Civic or even a Dodge Dart. Other compact sedans are tuned much better to an enthusiast driver's tastes. But if you are buying for someone else, and security, space, peace of mind, the learning curve or near-mythical QRD are important issues, the Corolla remains hard to beat. It's no fluke that Toyota has sold 40 million.

The all-new 2014 Toyota Corolla debuted last week with a fresh look, confirming that the Furia concept Toyota brought to the Detroit auto show was more than just an exercise in styling.



The Furia concept's sporty and flashy design intrigued us, and while the 2014 Corolla is an upgrade from the bland Corollas of the past, it also glosses over most of the flair of the Furia.


So, what hints did Toyota reveal with the Furia concept, and what got cut on the design-room floor?

Conception: The carbon fiber and flashy LEDs are gone, but the 2014 Corolla's rear remains tapered like the concept, and maintains the focus on larger taillights.



The last time the Corolla saw a makeover was in 2009, so we will see if the best-selling compact sedan can continue its sales success with this new design when it goes on sale this fall.

OUR TAKE: Remember the last Corolla? It was about as fun to drive and to look at as waiting in line at the DMV. They are usually steered by people who want reliability and see driving solely as a means to get from one place to another. And their cars are most likely painted in exciting colors such as beige, white and silver.


For the all-new 10th-generation model, the XRS adds a little flavor to the Corolla's bland recipe. The body kit, with front lip, side sills and spoiler, give it some visual flair. The fog lights help, too.


It's not a bad runner, either, and can be entertaining at times. Steering is responsive with the new electronic power system that provides good weight at high speeds but lightens up in low-speed situations. The ride is stable and comfortably during 80-mph jogs down the expressway and exhibits acceptable body roll when maneuvering around town.

The revised 2.4-literis powerful enough in combination with the manual and is very smooth. Brakes are a disappointment, with a mushy pedal feel.


Cabin comfort is high, with a surprisingly quiet environment for this class of car. Seats offer good support, and most surfaces are made of hard but good-looking materials.


The as-tested price, however, made us wince. Lopping off some of the frills to get the sticker closer to $20,000 makes a little more sense to us.

After trailing many of its competitors in the recent engine- and transmission-technology wars, Toyota Motor Corp. will launch a swath of powertrains in the next several years, a top powertrain r&d executive said.


Koei Saga, senior managing officer in charge of drivetrain r&d, said that Toyota is investing heavily in turbocharged engines, larger displacement Atkinson cycle engines, continuously variable and fixed-gear automatic transmissions, and new hybrid and fuel cell technologies.


Here's an update on Toyota's efforts:


Turbocharging: German automakers and Ford Motor Co. have made inroads using turbochargers to boost power while keeping engine displacements smaller and more efficient.


And while Toyota is joining the fight -- Lexus recently trademarked "NX 2.0T" for a two-liter turbo version of its upcoming Lexus compact crossover -- Saga is not convinced that Toyota will emphasize turbocharging across many product lines.


Saga believes that "upsizing" the displacement of engines, and running them on the more efficient Atkinson cycle of fuel combustion -- used in Toyota's hybrid system -- may deliver better power gains without sacrificing fuel economy.


While a larger displacement Atkinson cycle engine may offer less top-end horsepower than a traditional Otto internal combustion engine, its increased thermal efficiency allows for strong acceleration and better fuel economy, Saga said.


 


Saga declined to provide a horsepower target for the upcoming Toyota turbo engine. While Saga appreciates the performance boost of turbos, he said he was not convinced that turbocharging is technology that "makes the world better."


Many buyers of turbo-engine cars do so for the performance boost, not the possibility of better fuel economy.


In the interim, Toyota also is examining using water/steam injection to make its turbocharging fuel combustion more efficient, but "we will need giant computers to compile the microprocessors" to calculate the best fuel-air ratio for a water-injected turbo, Saga said.


Transmissions: Toyota has followed Honda Motor Co. in using continuously variable transmissions for a key volume nameplate, the Corolla.


Toyota plans to expand CVT use, but only where it makes sense, Saga said.


He described further development of CVTs as "crucial and important" to Toyota.


"The Corolla CVT has great acceleration. Drivers are thinking they are in a car with a great automatic transmission," Saga said in an interview with journalists here, after a Toyota global briefing about future platforms and design.


While the CVT could work with the Camry -- rivaling the Honda Accord's 2013 CVT -- Saga believes there are limits to the technology and Americans' desire for it.


The next Camry, slated to arrive in the 2017 model year, will have "a next-generation A/T, probably not a CVT," Saga said.


Any larger vehicle, such as the Highlander crossover, would have too much power and weight demand for a CVT to handle. But smaller cars such as the next-generation Yaris could warrant a CVT, Saga said.




Saga: The further development of CVTs is "crucial and important" to Toyota.


Hybrid batteries: Although many automakers are using lithium ion batteries in their hybrids, Toyota has stuck with an older-tech, nickel-metal hydride formulation while working on the liquid electrolyte levels of the lithium ion.


Saga said the next Prius may offer a combination of the batteries.


"A lithium ion battery can deliver the same energy in a 30 percent smaller package, but the life span and durability is outstanding for the nickel battery," Saga said.


Making the lithium ion battery larger to increase its long-term durability likely will encroach into occupant and cargo space.


However, for the Prius Plug-in, a lithium ion battery "is a must," he said.


Fuel cells: By the time Toyota's debut hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle goes from this year's early prototypes to serial production in early 2015, the company expects to cut the cost of producing the power plant in half, to about $51,000, and to halve it again by 2020.


That cost reduction will allow Toyota to start selling the vehicle for between $50,000 and $100,000, said Satoshi Ogiso, managing officer of Toyota Motor Corp. overseeing alternative vehicles, powertrains and chassis development.


By 2020, the cost of a fuel cell vehicle "will be closer to that of a plug-in hybrid vehicle, and cheaper than an electric vehicle," Ogiso said at a press briefing here, where journalists drove mules of the fuel-cell powerplant.


In 2007, when Toyota built about 100 units of the Highlander fuel cell demonstrator vehicle, the fuel cell system cost nearly $1 million per unit.


The upcoming Toyota fuel cell sedan — to be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in November, and which goes on sale in 2015 — is projected to have total global sales of between 5,000 and 10,000 units. Those volume efficiencies should help reduce the cost of the fuel cell pack to just 5 percent of what it was less than a decade ago, Ogiso said.


Toyota plans to launch its fuel cell vehicle in 2015, with the possibility of a 2014 launch in some markets.


"We can see our goal," in terms of hitting cost targets, although cost parity with traditional hybrids may take some time, Saga said. "We're taking out the engine and transmission and replacing it with a fuel cell and a small motor. I don't see it as too expensive to sell."


He said the original Prius was challenged by the same naysayers about cost accounting, and the Prius in now a profitable car. But the infrastructure hurdles of hydrogen refueling will keep mass acceptance low compared with gasoline-hybrid cars, Saga said.


Electric vehicles: Saga is not a big proponent of electric vehicles. He said Toyota -- or any large-scale automaker for that matter -- would not have developed the RAV4 EV if it weren't forced to comply with California Air Resources Board regulations.


And while Saga admires the performance of the Tesla Model S, he doubts if the business plan can grow "when sales are based on targeting rich users for whom this is their third or fourth car."

The 2014 Toyota Corolla arrives in dealerships later this year, but some bits of information about the big seller have leaked through a Kansas dealer to Car and Driver.


The Corolla will stick with a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine, but will add Toyota's Valvematic variable valve timing, which may add a few ponies. A four-speed automatic will be standard on base models, while a six-speed manual will also be offered, replacing the old five-speed . Higher-priced trims will use a CVT.


Styling, according to C&D, will be a cross between the angular Furia concept we saw at the Detroit auto show and the mundane Camry. The dealer also says that the interior will receive a handful of welcome upgrades.



Four trim levels will be offered: base, LE, S and Eco. We assume some sort of hybrid model is in the cards, and fuel economy will probably grow.


The current Corolla makes 132 hp from a 1.8-liter and costs $17,025, including destination.

 The Toyota Matrix hatchback is not likely to be replaced in the U.S. market.



Toyota will roll out Tundra and Corolla redesigns next year and will revise the RAV4, Avalon and Highlander, but there are some things the division probably won't do.


For example, there is a strong possibility that the Corolla-based Matrix hatchback will not be renewed for the United States when the Corolla redesign comes next fall.


"If we don't have the Matrix, it won't be the end of the world," said Toyota Division boss Bill Fay at the press introduction of the RAV4 in Phoenix.


Canada will continue to get the Matrix, he said.


And while Honda has decided to build a subcompact crossover based on the Fit platform, Fay said Toyota has no plans to add a crossover below the RAV4.


"The RAV is as small as we want to get," he said. "I am confident with where Toyota is with that. It meets all or most of our customer needs in that segment. We're fine."



The Toyota brand gained 1.4 points of market share, to 12.2 percent, in 2012. Fay said it "will try to continue to grow faster than the industry" in 2013, but he declined to give a volume target.


Toyota likely will launch its "Let's Go Places" umbrella advertising campaign with a commercial during the Super Bowl, although Fay said he's not sure if it will feature the RAV4, Avalon or both.


Scion sales are up 51 percent this year and likely will finish at around 75,000 units. But that is still far short of where Fay wants to see the brand.


"In the near term, I'd like to see more like 100,000," he said. "There needs to be a certain volume to keep everyone's attention.


"Of course, our dealers would love to see Scion at 200 or 300,000, and we continue to talk to them about Scion being about more than just volume," Fay said.


Helping to boost the brand will be replacements of the xB and xD compact hatchbacks, to be introduced at the New York auto show in March. Scion also will have several special edition vehicles commemorating the 10th anniversary of the brand, he said.
