Researchers have found senior citizens are far more liable to suffer from problem gambling than the general population. While the number of potential problem gambling victims runs no higher than 3 percent, WREX-TV says studies have discovered the number is as high as 11 percent among those 65 and older.
The percentage is considered high by many experts on responsible gaming, as the survey defined problem gambling as betting more than is affordable over a year, or placing more than $100 on a single bet. While the first part is valid, the amount chosen for the second measurement is arbitrary and irrelevant, say observers. Still, it is agreed that seniors are at greater risk.
A number of cultural issues cause this tendency. Among the factors contributing to the high rate of susceptibility to compulsive gambling are the loss of spouse, onset of serious illness, and the use of medications that affect judgement, such as Parkinson's treatments.
Life-changing events at later ages, then, put seniors at risk for problem gambling. Among the warning signs are the hiding of gambling activity, a drawing upon personal equity to fund gambling, and severe mood swings as a result of gaming wins and losses.
Counselors say treatment may consist of tightening family bonds and developing activities and hobbies to keep the victim's life balanced and full. If the disorder is increasing, professional counseling and therapy may be necessary.
