Studies Confirm Problem Gamblers Have Different Brains Affirming the results of several other surveys, a new UCLA study found that people who have problem gambling issues have physically different brains from the norm.

Debunking the theory that expending gambling creates problem gamblers, yet another study reveals that compulsive gambling victims have physical differences in their brain operations. A high level of dopamine release when gambling is consistent with the same physical peculiarity among drug addicts and alcoholics, according to a UCLA study.
Dr. Peter Prezkop and Dr. Timothy Fong said the dopamine response triggers impulses to lose control, whether it be at gambling, drinking, or other substance abuse. Spiraling behavior, with increasing wagers, is a result of dysfunctional brain activity.
Fong says that the resultant stimulation actually causes a drop in activity in regions controlling problem solving and executive functions. Responsibility recedes, while the brain calls for action.
"It's similar to patients with methamphetamine addiction,." says Fong. "The real challenge in treatment is to reverse that."
Outdated theories that the proliferation of gambling may cause a moral breakdown in weak individuals, creating problem gambling where a healthy population had existed, are still advanced by gaming and casino opponents. But studies such as this have consistently found evidence that compulsive gamblers suffer from their mental imbalance whether legal gambling is present or not.
