Paton has been offered a two-match suspension and given until Wednesday to respond to the charge for the alleged incident involving Dons winger Jonny Hayes.

Hayes himself had taken to social media to defend Paton though, tweeting "Just wanna clear it up that Paul Paton never spat at me.

"What happened on Saturday will stay between myself and Paul. We've spoke on this non-issue and, if asked, I'll confirm what happened to the Scottish FA.

"I'd never want to see a fellow pro being accused or found guilty of something that never happened."

Meanwhile, Queen of the South defender Andrew Dowie has been charged with violent conduct during their victory over Rangers on Friday night.

Dowie is alleged to have deliberately stood an opposing player's leg during their 2-0 victory at Palmerston – he too has until Wednesday to respond to the charge, for which he has also been offered a two-match suspension.
