WACO, Texas (AP) Freshman Johnathan Motley had 22 points and Baylor overcame a slow start to beat Texas A&M 77-63 on Tuesday night when the former Big 12 and Southwest Conference rivals played for the first time in three seasons.

Rico Gathers had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his 11th career double-double at Baylor (8-1), which won its ninth straight home game.

Kourtney Roberson and Alex Robinson each had 11 points for the Aggies (6-2), who had won five in a row. They shot a season-best 58 percent (22 of 38), but were outrebounded 36-17.

This was the 206th meeting in the Battle of the Brazos, referring to the river that touches both college towns only about 90 miles apart. It is the second-longest played rivalry for both teams behind Texas, but hadn't been played since Texas A&M left for the SEC after the 2011-12 season.

Midway through the second half, Motley had a rebound that he converted into a putback basket. After Kenny Chery had a steal and a breakaway layup, Motley made another strong move to the basket, with a spin move to get free for a layup that made it 59-39.

After missing their first five shots and falling behind 8-1 in the first four minutes of the game, the Bears went ahead to stay with a 13-4 run over the last four minutes of the first half.

Gathers made two free throws with 3:54 left for a 27-26 Baylor lead. Taurean Prince then made a 3-pointer from the right wing before he had a steal and was fouled on a drive, though he made only the second of his two free throws.

Lester Medford and Prince each added 11 points, and Al Freeman 10 for the Bears. Motley also had nine rebounds.

Texas A&M: The Aggies played the first of two games in 12 days against former Big 12 foes. They play Kansas State on Dec. 20.

Baylor: The Bears are 3-0 against SEC teams this season, having also won at South Carolina and Vanderbilt. ... Baylor is 27-4 against in-state opponents since 2011-12.
